Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before buying or running a Wi-Fi silent disco event.

For Guests
Do I need to download an app?

No. Silent Disco WiFi is a web application. When the host displays a QR code, you scan it with your phone camera and the silent disco player opens directly in Safari, Chrome, or any modern browser. No App Store, no Google Play, no account creation required. Learn more: Silent Disco Without an App.

What phones work?

Any modern smartphone:

  • iPhone — iOS 14.5 or later, using Safari or Chrome
  • Android — Android 9 or later, using Chrome (recommended), Firefox, or Samsung Browser
  • Tablets — iPad or Android tablet, same browser requirements
  • Laptops — Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox

The only requirement is that your device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the DJ setup.

Do I need mobile data?

No. Everything runs on the local venue Wi-Fi. Your phone streams audio directly from the DJ laptop over the local network — not the internet. You don't need a cellular signal at all during the event.

Do my Bluetooth headphones work?

Yes. AirPods, Galaxy Buds, Beats, Sony WH-series — any Bluetooth earbuds work fine. The phone receives the audio stream from the web app, then sends it to your earbuds via Bluetooth. Because the Bluetooth link is between your phone and your own earbuds (not shared across the event), there's no interference at scale regardless of how many people are there.

What if I walk out of Wi-Fi range?

Audio will pause while you're out of range. When you walk back into coverage and reconnect, the web app automatically resumes the stream within a few seconds — no need to reload the page or re-scan the QR code.

For Operators
Is the audio in sync across all phones?

Yes. Silent Disco WiFi uses a reliable audio-derived clock and a 1,200ms playback buffer to keep every listener within 20ms of each other — indistinguishable to human hearing. The system is specifically designed so a room full of phones on different models plays the same beat at the same time.

How many listeners can I support?

The Pro license has no listener cap. Practical limits come from your Wi-Fi hardware:

  • Standard venue router: 50–100 listeners
  • Prosumer AP (Ubiquiti, TP-Link EAP): 150–250 per AP
  • Enterprise AP (Ubiquiti U6-Enterprise, Meraki): 300–500 per AP
  • Multi-AP deployment: 1,000+ total

See the listener capacity guide and enterprise Wi-Fi setup for details.

What computer do I need?

Silent Disco WiFi is a macOS application. It runs on macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later. A MacBook Air or MacBook Pro is sufficient for any event size — the software is optimized to use minimal CPU even with hundreds of simultaneous listeners. The DJ laptop should be connected to the network via ethernet for best performance.

Can I use the venue's existing Wi-Fi?

Yes, with one important caveat: client isolation must be disabled on the network you're using. Client isolation prevents devices on the same network from communicating with each other — which also blocks guests from reaching the DJ laptop. Most hotel and conference center networks have client isolation on by default. Ask venue IT to disable it on your event SSID, or bring your own access point. See the enterprise Wi-Fi guide.

How many channels (DJs) can I run simultaneously?

Silent Disco WiFi supports up to 3 simultaneous channels, each with its own name and color that guests see in the player. Each channel is a separate audio input — you can run 3 different DJs, genres, or language tracks at the same time. Guests switch between channels with a single tap.

Does it work outdoors?

Yes, if you bring Wi-Fi coverage to the outdoor space. Silent Disco WiFi needs a local Wi-Fi network that both the DJ laptop and guests' phones are connected to. For outdoor events, you'd bring a portable access point or cellular Wi-Fi hotspot. See the enterprise Wi-Fi guide for outdoor AP recommendations.

Licensing & Pricing
What's the difference between Starter and Pro?

The Starter license caps simultaneous listeners at 25 — ideal for small private events, fitness classes, yoga studios, and rehearsals. The Pro license removes all listener limits and is designed for venues and event operators who run larger events.

Both licenses include the same core software, 3-channel support, and QR code guest join flow. See the full pricing comparison.

Can I use one license for multiple venues?

Yes. A license is per operator, not per venue or per event. You can run unlimited events at unlimited venues under a single license — the software runs on your Mac wherever you take it.

Is there a free trial?

The Starter license is available at a lower price point and lets you run full events with up to 25 simultaneous listeners. It's designed as an entry point for testing Silent Disco WiFi at a real event before upgrading to Pro for larger crowds.
