How It Works Technically
Your DJ laptop runs the Silent Disco WiFi software. When it starts a session, it creates a local web server on your venue's network and displays a QR code. The QR code encodes a local URL — something like http://192.168.1.X:3000/join.
When guests scan it, their phone browser fetches the web app from the DJ laptop — it loads instantly because it's on the same local network, not the internet. The app then opens a low-latency audio stream and plays it through the phone's audio output.
Does It Work on All Phones?
Yes. Silent Disco WiFi is tested and working on:
- iPhone — Safari (iOS 14.5+) and Chrome for iOS
- Android — Chrome (recommended), Firefox, Samsung Internet
- iPad / Android tablets — same browsers as above
- Laptops — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge
The only requirement is that the device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the DJ laptop.
What If a Guest Doesn't Have a Smartphone?
The web app also works on any device with a browser. A guest with a basic tablet, a borrowed laptop, or even a friend's phone can join. You can also print the URL below the QR code so guests who can't scan can type it in manually.
